The 7th National Congress of the Vietnam Farmers’ Union will take place from Tuesday to Thursday. 999 delegates representing more than 10 million farmers will attend the Congress to discuss assistance programs for members.

Themed “Democracy, Unity, Renovation, Integration, Development”, the National Congress of the Vietnam Farmers’ Union is an important political event marking the Union’s reform period. With Party and State support, the Union has promoted its role in agriculture and new rural development, and its contribution sizably to the national socio-economy and defense.

Helping farmers in production and trade

Between 2013 and 2018, the Union admitted 2 million farmers, bringing the total membership to more than 10 million. Many production emulation movements have mobilized farmers to help each other in production, trade, poverty reduction, new rural development, and building cultural residential areas.

Thao Loi, Head of the Dac Me Farmers’ Union in Kon Tum province, said: “We expect the Congress to find ways to help ethnic minority farmers upgrade their agricultural infrastructure. The Brau and other ethnic people want to escape poverty and increase production.”

Emulation movements such as Excellent Farmers in Production and Trade and Farmers Helping Each Other in Production and Poverty Reduction have attracted a large number of people. Many households have gotten incentive loans to buy equipment and seedlings.

Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy of the Thai Nguyen provincial Farmers’ Union has recommended that the State and the Union adopt more policies on agricultural land management to help farmers expand their production and apply VietGap standards and technology.

“The Union should organize more activities to connect farmers and help them understand their rights and benefits under socio-economic development programs.” Thuy said.

Improving lives of farmers

In the 5th and 6th tenure, the Vietnam Farmers’ Union has worked with ministries, sectors, and Vietnamese and foreign organizations and enterprises to mobilize resources for activities, and operations that help its members. The Union has helped farmers comply with and enjoy the results of Party and State guidelines on national development. The Union has put forward policy recommendations on agriculture, farmers, and rural areas.

Nguyen Thi Hong Ly, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Farmers’ Union, said: “Farmers trust Party guidelines and State policies. They have promoted tradition, patriotism, self-reliance, confidence, and creativity, and have aspired to be better off. Rural areas have changed visibly towards industry and services and the rural environment has been improved. Social order has been maintained.”

The 7th Congress of the Vietnam Farmers’ Union will discuss solutions, work with the government and enterprises to resolve farmers’ problems, and serve as a representative organization to protect the legitimate rights and interests of farmers.
