Through a rise of local communities whom prefer to be self-sustainable as much as possible, a new niche of products show us a thoughtful trend that's in favor of decentralizing major food supplies, and promote hyper-localism instead.

Such is the Berlin-based start-up Infarm, whom bring urban indoor gardening to it’s next level with a miniature greenhouse that makes fresh, chemical-free and genetically unaltered fruits and vegetables accessible for all city dwellers.

The Infarm Micro Garden was created in collaboration with the Stockholm Design Group "Tomorrow Machine," and is the smallest greenhouse in the world – it was inspired by the art of origami – and is semi-transparent so users can view the whole growing process.

Using the greenhouse is very easy. The kit comes as a flatpack and consists of three items, a foldable greenhouse made from recycled plastic, organic seeds, and the agar-agar powder.

To use the kit, start by folding the greenhouse. Next, boil water, mix in the powder, then pour the mix into the open greenhouse. Sprinkle the seeds, close the Microgarden and wait.

Then, after approximately two weeks or less, the home-grown micro greens are ready to be eaten.

On an average basis, our food travels about 1500 km, has been through 28 different pairs of hands and consumes an incredible amount of energy before ending up on our plates.

Infarm wants to encourage people that live in the city to consider where their food comes from and sees the Microgarden Growing Kit as a starting point for those who want to grow their own food in an urban environment.

"Our vision is that the Microgarden makes indoor farming available and easy for everyone". "Where you can have delicious greens without pesticides or long transportation, by growing it in your own home. It does not get more local and organic than that."

Also, Infarm shares that, as long as your greens fit the kit, there's no limit to what can be grown.

Infarm is currently crowdsourcing for funds to turn this concept into a real product on Indiegogo. The campaign will run until June 13, 2014 – each donor will have the opportunity to own a kit before are released on the market.

Welcome to the future of home gardening!
