Fruit & vegetable trade up in January

The export and import of fruit and vegetables increased sharply in the first month of 2018.
Exports in January totaled $320 million, up 37 per cent over January last year.
China, Japan, the US, and South Korea remained the top four importers: China $269 million, the US $11 million, Japan $10 million, and South Korea $6.9 million.
Vietnam imported fruit and vegetables worth nearly $160 million in the month, up 57 per cent year-on-year. Eighty per cent was fruit.
Thailand led in source markets, with more than $73 million, then China with $39 million, the US $18 million, Australia $5.9 million, Myanmar $4.2 million, South Korea $3.6 million, New Zealand $3 million, and South Africa $2.8 million.
Global demand for vegetables is expected to increase by more than 15 per cent this year, with Vietnam’s exports anticipated to total $5 billion.
