The covid-19 pandemic continues to affect the exports of Vietnamese tuna, which has shown no signal of recovery. However, the Japanese and Egyptian markets are displaying some good signs.

According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in April 2020, the country saw a 36% decrease in exporting tuna to the US compared to the same period last year but demand for canned tuna keeps rising due to the coronavirus outbreak, resulting in a 2% increase in exports with the selling price is the second-highest level among top ten suppliers of canned tuna to this market.

Vietnam’s tuna exports to the EU continued to decrease in April, resulting in a 18% decline in total worth of tuna exports to the EU in the first four months of 2020 (reaching 82 million USD). In April, Vietnam saw an increase in tuna exports to German and Italy.

Meanwhile, tuna exports to ASEAN increased 4% in April compared to the same period last year. Remarkably, tuna exports to the biggest importing market in the group, Thailand, increased by 61%.

Sales to some other major markets such as Japan and Egypt continue to rise. As of late April 2020, Vietnam’s tuna exports to Japan increased by 36% and Egypt by 59%. Japan is ramping up buying multiple processed tuna products from Vietnam, especially frozen steamed tuna which increased by 111% from last year. Egypt is champing to buy Vietnam’s canned tuna.
