Chau Thanh: 5,500 hectares of high-tech dragon fruit built

Recently, Chau Thanh district of Long An province focused on applying high technology in producing dragon fruit, it initially brings efficiency.

Presently, the district has 9,100 hectares of dragon fruit, of which 1,005 hectares of white-flesh dragon fruit, 8,095 hectares of red-flesh dragon fruit, the fruit-bearing area is 8,500 hectares. Implementing the project of producing dragon fruits in the direction of sustainable development in the period 2020-2025, by March 2021, the whole district now has over 3,044 hectares of dragon fruits with over 5,044 households participating; 664.38 hectares of dragon fruit 1,041 households participated in being granted VietGAP certificates.

Chau Thanh dragon fruit 

The district coordinates with the Department of Science and Technology to develop the geographical indication "Chau Thanh Long An dragon fruit"; at the same time, the district aslo guides the cooperatives to prepare dossiers to request the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to issue geographical indications for each cooperative. The whole district has 13 out of 15 cooperatives issued barcodes by the National Office of Intellectual Property. Up to now, 5 out of 15 cooperatives have been granted the label of dragon fruit.

According to the Chairman of the District People's Committee - Nguyen Van Khai, the communes and towns will continue to propagate and mobilize farmers to maintain and keep the dragon fruit area applying high technology in the coming time and re-plant old dragon fruit areas; striving to 2025, the whole district will have 5,500 hectares of dragon fruit applying high technology according to the target of the Resolution of the XIth Congress of Provincial Party Committee, term 2020-2025, in which, to build 300-hectare area for growing dragon fruit meeting GlobalGAP standard.

In order for dragon fruit trees to develop sustainably on Chau Thanh land, Mr. Nguyen Van Khai directed the Agriculture sector and communes and towns to completely build geographical indications, with full barcodes, traceability and origin, brands, farmers must join cooperative groups, cooperatives, produce according to VietGAP process (this is the lowest standard), then gradually increase to production of organic dragon fruit without using chemical fertilizers, herbicides, building a balanced and sustainable ecological environment. During the production process, farmers should note that they must record in full and accurate production diaries the information to serve as a basis for traceability of dragon fruits.
