Canned tuna becomes favorite to Greece
According to statistics by the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in the first seven months of this year, Vietnam’s tuna exports have reached 429 million USD, up 20.3% compared with the same months a year earlier, with the Greek market up by 100%.
By July 2019, Vietnam’s tuna exports have reached 1.8 million USD, up 104% compared to the same period last year, with canned tuna accounting for 94 percent of export value.
Italy’s canned tuna was Greek’s favorite food; however, the increased price has resulted in the downward trend of high-quality canned tuna in Greece since 2016. Greek has turned to buy canned tunas from Asian countries since 2018.
According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, Greece imported 2,712 tons of canned tuna from Asia in 2018, up 21% compared to the previous year, with Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam and Turkey being the biggest suppliers.
Even though Greece is a country of canned tuna, its production can not meet the increasing demand of the local citizens and it has to boost its import.
