Bac Giang exports 15 tonnes of lychees to Japan

Tan Yen district in the northern province of Bac Giang which is renowned for lychee growing in Vietnam, hosted a ceremony on May 26 to mark the shipment of 15 tonnes of its lychees to Japan.

The consignment has been conducted by local exporters Global Food Import-Export Joint Stock Company and Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Co., Ltd.

2021 marks the second year that lychees from Bac Giang have successfully made inroads into the demanding Japanese market.

Le Anh Duong, chairman of Bac Giang People's Committee, said the locality has taken a range of drastic steps to ensure safe lychee production amid complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has recently granted geographical indication protection for lychees grown in Luc Ngan district of Bac Giang province. 

The Japanese side has already authorised the Plant Protection Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to inspect the quality of packaging stages for lychee exports to Japan.

This year has seen Bac Giang’s overall lychee cultivation area reach 28,100 hectares, with an estimated output of 180,000 tonnes. The growing areas which meet VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards are 15,200 hectares and 82 hectares, respectively.

Meanwhile, the lychee growing areas specifically for export to the United States and Australia have reached ​​218 hectares, with an estimated output of 1,800 tonnes. The growing area for the Japanese market stands at 219 hectares with an estimated output of 1,800 tonnes.

Bac Giang is scheduled to host a teleconference on June 8 aimed at promoting lychee consumption this year. The event will be connected to 29 locations worldwide.
