VN pangasius exports up 9.6% in 2016

In 2016, Vietnam’s pangasius exports reached US$1.71 billion, up 9.6% year on year. Exports to the U.S. and China reported the higher growth while sales to the EU continued to decline.

The U.S.: In QIV/2016, Vietnam pangasius exports to the U.S. reached US$100.6 million, up 21% compared to the same period 2015. In 2016, pangasius exports to the U.S. reached US$387.4 million, up 22.8% compared to 2015. This was the largest importing market of Vietnam pangasius, accounting for 22.6% of the total export values.

In 2016, the U.S. imported catfish from 13 major suppliers in which Vietnam, China and Guyana were 3 largest suppliers.

Besides importing pangasius, the U.S. imported some white fish in which tilapia products from China is a strong competitor of Vietnam pangasius. Besides, antidumping duty and catfish inspection program continued to affect Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the U.S. in 2017.

China - Hong Kong: After the high growth in the first 3 quarters of 2016, as of September 2016, China overtook the EU to become the 2nd largest importer of Vietnam pangasius. In 2016, sales to the market reached US$304.7 million, up 88.7% compared to 2015.

Currently, China - Hong Kong is in the process of becoming the largest market of Vietnam pangasius.

The EU: In QIV/2016, the value of pangasius exports to the EU reached US$63.8 million, down 3.2% compared to the same period 2015. In 2016, the sales to this market reached US$260.9 million, down 8.5% compared to 2015. In particular, the export value to 4 largest single markets decreased: the Netherlands (-7.5%); the UK (-4.2%); Spain (-6.2%) and Germany (-4.9%) compared with 2015.

Pangasius exports to the EU face unhealthy competition in communication from competitors.

Other markets: Pangasius exports to some other major markets reported the reduction such as ASEAN downed 0.2%; Mexico fell 12%; Brazil fell 12.5%, Colombia downed 5.4%; Saudi Arabia also fell 16.6%.
