A ceremony was held in the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long on April 19 to announce the first batch of Vinh Long mangoes to be exported to the United States, which is the result of negotiations between Vietnam and the US over the past 10 years.

The first batch of Vinh Long mangoes to be exported to the US is harvested in Vung Liem district

Accordingly, 1.5 tonnes of mangoes, grown by Can Num Trung Chanh and Quoi An cooperatives in Vinh Long’s Vung Liem district, were purchased and packaged by the Vina T&T Import-Export Service Trading Co., Ltd., based in Ho Chi Minh City, at prices 15% higher than the market.

Vinh Long currently has 5,000 hectares of mangoes, as reported by the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Over the past few years, mango has also been considered among the group of advantageous and potential plants in the locality’s agricultural restructuring scheme. Therefore, Vinh Long’s agricultural sector has offered support for mango cultivation through many programmes and projects, guiding the cultivation techniques, certifying quality standards and granting planting zone codes. So far, the province has had two cultivation areas provided with codes, three cooperatives certified with VietGAP standards and many cooperative groups offered with training on safe production technical processes.

Mango is the sixth fruit of Vietnam allowed to enter the US market, following dragon fruit, rambutan, longan, lychee and star apple. With mango receiving an export license, Vietnamese fruits have increasingly affirmed their position in the world market thanks to their high quality, competitive prices and businesses’ participation in global supply chains.

Earlier, on April 18, the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap also held a ceremony to announce the first batch of its mangoes exported to the US.
