According to Japan Customs Department, in the first eight months of 2021, the quantity of seafood imported into Japan reached 1.23 million tons, worth 915.4 billion Yen (equivalent to USD 8.16 billion), an increase of 0.7% in quantity and 2.1% in value compared to the same period in 2021.

Seafood imports into Japan in August experienced a sharp increase in comparison with July 2021. Imports from China, the USA, Thailand, India also increased significantly while imports from Chile and South Korea’s markets showed signs of a dramatic decrease.

Vietnam became Japan's third largest supply market of seafood in August as well as in the first 8 months of 2021.

In the first 8 months of 2021, imports of seafood from Vietnam into Japan reached 92 thousand tons, worth USD 696 million, a sharp increase in volume compared to two other market suppliers for Japan which are China and Chile. Vietnam’s seafood market share in Japan’s total imports therefore increased, from 7.3% in the first eight months of 2020 to 7.5% for the first eight months of 2021.

Japan's demand for seafood imports has shown signs of recovery and is likely to continue to rise in the following months of 2021 when the pandemic control progress in Japan is showing positive signals.

According to the data, on October 10th, 2021, the number of new Covid-19 cases in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, has dropped to 82 cases, the lowest point since October 19th, 2020.

The "state of emergency" declaration and the Key measures to prevent the spread, which has been promulgated from April 2021 in Japan, have been removed on a national scale since October 1st, 2021. This is an opportunity for Vietnamese businesses to promote seafood exports to the Japanese market in the context that the Covid-19 pandemic has been fundamentally contained in this country. The production activities of the seafood industry are currently making a strong comeback.
