Tuna exports to several markets rocket

In September, Vietnam Tuna exports to markets only increased 1.4% compared to September last year, but there are dramatic increases in some markets.

According to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP), in September, Vietnam tuna exports to markets increased 1.4% while the growth rate was 20.4% in August and 2.1% in July. That means export growth is not stable However, In September, tuna exports to several markets such as Spain, Canada... increased dramatically.

Separately, in September, Vietnam exported 53 million USD of tuna products to markets that made the total export value reach 474 million USD in the first nine months of 2018, up 10.3% compared to the same period in the 2017. Particularly, after the recovery in August, Vietnam tuna exported to USA decreased.

Tuna exported value to USA in September was worth almost 19 million USD, down 7.2% compared to the same period. The trade war between USA and China has made opportunities for Asian countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand to dominate the Chinese market in this field. However in this race, the competitiveness of Vietnam’s businesses/companies is weaker than the Philippines and Thailand. The trend for Vietnam’s tuna exports to the EU slowed down, the growth rate was 47% in August, down 1.3% in September.

However, the total for 9 months in 2018 of tuna exports into the EU had good growth, 22% over the same period in 2017, reaching 118 million USD. Beside that, in September, Vietnam tuna exports to the EU market reported strong development and unexpected fluctuations. Especially, Spain with a sharp growth rate reached up to 336%, occupied the leading position from Germany, while Vietnam’s tuna exports to Germany and the Netherlands in September had negative growth rates.

After the downward trend in August, tuna exports to Israel in September rebounded. The value of tuna exported to this market reached 4.3 million in September, up 75% over September 2017, bringing the total export value in 9 months this year to 53 million USD, up 51% over the same period last year. With the fast growing trend, this field is attracting Vietnamese businesses.
