Le Quang Chien, living in Hamlet 3, Tan Hung Commune, is one example of good farmers and businessmen in Bau Bang district in the period of 2017-2019. Every year, his pomelo orchard generates about VND 2 billion of profit. In its first years, he encountered many difficulties, but with many efforts and the support from local government, he has built up a brand name of Phuong Hang green skin pomelo.

Mr. Chien is at his family's pomelo orchard.

To work elaborately

Mr. Chien's pomelo orchard has many trees with green leaves, round full fruits that are waiting for harvest. Mr. Chien said that he chose Tan Hung land (he used to live in Dong Son and Thanh Hoa districts) to grow pomelo because it is very favorable for pomelo cultivation. In addition, he found that market demand for pomelo is on the rise, especially in the North, so he decided to invest in this tree.

In 2007, he invested nearly 500 million VND in planting 3 ha of green skin pomelo. Mr. Chien said that the most difficult thing when planting green skin pomelo is how to choose a good variety, growers must have right techniques and suffer losses during the first period. After 4 years, his pomelo orchard gave good yields. The first season's revenue could not offset the cost, but the good thing was that revenues of the following years were higher than previous years. In the period of 2011-2013, after substracting expenses, the orchard brought him a profit of about VND1 billion. He also paid off the initial investment cost and continued to upgrade his orchard.

In addition to traditional farming methods, Mr. Chien also explored new techniques, such as using organic fertilizers and biological products, while ensuring elements of pesticide use, helping plants grow well and increase its resistance strength, reduce some pests, diseases, improve productivity by 20% or more.

To gain annual profit of VND2 billion

Thanks to knowledge gained from visiting efficient pomelo growing models inside and outside the province, and recommendations, advices from Nguyen Thanh Thuy (owner of Thanh Thuy green skin pomelo in Bau Bang district ), Mr. Chien confidently cut down non-purebred trees and replaced with pure trees that give higher yields.

“In addition to replanting purebred pomelo trees from Thanh Thuy farm, I also read documents and books to apply scientific and technical advances into taking care of the orchard. Thus, from 2014-2018, pomelo yields of our family increased, achieved high productivity, good quality, and was certified by VietGAP”, said Mr. Chien.

Due to the application of new variety and new scientific and technical advances, his 3-ha pomelo orchard gained good yields; after deducting expenses, he earns nearly VND2 billion/year. His products are mainly provided for the Northern market and local market on big holidays and Tet. More importantly, with the certification of Phuong Hang pomelo, his pomelo orchard has become more and more popular.
