Technologies in the service of agriculture

Hanoi has gradually established high-tech agricultural production areas by strengthening scientific and technological applications in agriculture.

At a conference on strengthening the application of science and technology in developing high-tech agricultural production sustainably, Le Ngoc Anh, director of the Hanoi Department of Science and Technology, said the city has paid special attention to strengthening the application of science and technology in agricultural production. Application of new technologies and environmental treatment contributed to establishing scientific processes and devising new solutions as well as creating high quality competitive products, such as Dien pomelo and Yen Chau red berries.

Hanoi has formed 50 specialized flower growing areas on more than 20ha each in Me Linh, Dan Phuong, Tay Ho, and Bac Tu Liem districts. In particular, the Dan Hoai Cooperative and Flora Vietnam have invested in greenhouse, irrigation system, air conditioners and humidifiers to grow high-quality flowers, such as lilies and orchids, bringing in revenues of VND4-5 billion per year.

High-quality rice growing models have also shown effectiveness. In particular, in Thach That District, the Kim Cuong 111 rice variety has been planted in three communes on 30ha plots, yielding on average 60-66.7 quintals per ha.

Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Ngo Thi Thanh Hang, said science and technology have positively and efficiently participated in developing added value and sustainability, improving farmer’s living standards and building new rural areas. At present, the city has a total of 89 high-tech agricultural production models and 56 connection models.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Van Tung said the capital city should pay special attention to strengthening the mechanization and application of new technologies in order to create products serving exports; encourage startups in the agricultural sector; and create favorable conditions for enterprises to invest in agriculture.

Prof. Nguyen Lan Hung said Hanoi has many advantages and potential for high-tech agriculture. Therefore, the city needs to focus on transferring scientific and technological applications to farmers in order to produce high-quality goods to meet the demand of residents.

Dang Van Dong, deputy director of the Research Institute of Fruits and Vegetables, said Hanoi should boost high-tech agricultural production, promote administrative reform and figure out preferential policies for the agricultural sector.

Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Ngo Thi Thanh Hang said Hanoi will strive to become a large center for creativity and technology transfer in agriculture.
