In 2021, Quang Binh Agricultural Extension Center has linked up with the provincial Department of Science and Technology to build many models of applying scientific and technological measures in agricultural production.

In recent years, although Quang Binh has achieved many outstanding successes in agricultural production, especially in rice production, the use of high-quality rice varieties used remained humble and economic efficiency did commensurate with the province's potentials.

To diversify crop and livestock varieties and breeds, Quang Binh Department of Science and Technology in collaboration with the province's agricultural extension center has built fish-rice farming model in Quang Ninh district. The model was carried out by Van Hai Production and Business Cooperative.

The pilot model was deployed on two hectares of Van Hai Cooperative's rice field. By November 2021, the model got the nod. After eight months of raising, fish could reach an average length of 37.3cm and survival rate was 85%. Meanwhile rice thrived well and growth duration was shortened to 120 days.  Farmers could harvest 662.5 kilos of fish and 21.5 tons of rice making a profit of more than VND39 million.

Since May 2021 the Agricultural Extension Center of Quang Binh has linked up with Sen Viet Group Invest Company Limited to implement the project of breeding Khua pig. A survey conducted in the end of November 2021 showed that the survival rate was 100% (30 pigs). These pigs are now under monitoring and growing normally. Up to now the total of 30 pigs has reached the slaughter weight.

Besides, the experimental model of ST25 rice farming carried out by Dai Phong Agricultural Cooperative (Phong Thuy commune, Le Thuy district) has recently been accepted. The aim was to evaluate the growth and the resistance to pests and diseases of ST rice variety; building a proper process for ST rice seed production in Le Thuy district - the key rice-growing area of Quang Binh province.

ST25 rice variety can mature in around 125 for winter-spring crop and in around 105 days for summer-autumn crop. It is suitable for the winter-spring crop. This model can create a net profit of VND84.885 million or VND28.295 million per ha, 1.5 times higher than other rice varieties.

Tran Ngọc Tuan, Director of the Center for Science-Technology Application and Statistics under Quang Binh's Department of Science and Technology said these farming models have met commercial demand and solved pressing problems of each locality.

Through the connectivity and hi-tech farming models, local authorities at all levels and farmers have changed their minds to focus on the application of scientific advances and the investment in scientific researches. These changes will contribute to improving production, quality and efficiency per unit area, reducing poverty and building new-style rural areas associated with market mechanism and environmental protection.
