Mongolia is seeking to boost livestock exports to Vietnam and offering its service as a conduit for Vietnamese exports to Europe. These were two of the issues discussed at a meeting in Hanoi in early April between Mongolian Minister of Foreign Affairs Tsend Munkh-Orgil, and Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Nguyen Xuan Cuong.

Tsend Munkh-Orgil expressed a desire to strengthen coordination with the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to promote agricultural exports to Vietnam, especially livestock products, which he hoped would be popular in Vietnam. In addition, Vietnam can promote exports to European countries in a quick manner through Mongolia, he added.

Nguyen Xuan Cuong said that the Mongolian economy has been developing in recent years and Mongolia has plentiful resources serving agricultural production. In particular, Mongolia has achieved success in changing from traditional to organic agriculture and its abundant grassland and meadows provide good livestock breeding areas.

Nguyen Xuan Cuong also said that trade turnover between the two countries remains modest at around US$60 million, but it could well be increased with livestock exports to Vietnam. Mongolia has introduced four livestock processing businesses and exporters to Vietnam, and Vietnam will send experts to conduct surveys in order to implement the deal.

The Mongolian market is in need of seafood, fruits and juices – products in which Vietnam has an advantage. In the future, Mongolia will also serve as an ASEAN gateway to export goods to Russia, Eastern European countries and Europe. Therefore, the two sides can promote cooperation in order to enjoy mutual benefits. In addition, Mongolia can provide leather and cotton for the Vietnamese garment and textile, footwear and leather sectors.

Mongolia is ready to cooperate with Vietnam in the garment and textile, footwear and leather sectors. In addition, Mongolia wants Vietnam to share its experience and promote cooperation in the fields of culture and education.
