In 2019, the income per cultivation unit and number of new rural style communes in the northern province of Bac Giang were higher than the national average figure, proving for a dramatic change in the agriculture and rural area. Promoting the result, Bac Giang further works out the solutions to achieve outstanding progress  in the upcoming years.

Bell peppers are grown in membrane house in Tien Dung commune (Yen Dung district).

Raising the income value

We visited the hi-tech agriculture model (HTAM) of the family of Le Van Si in Bai Loi hamlet, Tam Di commune (Luc Nam district). Entering the only entrance door to the production area covered in the membrane, everyone felt much warmer. Si said the inner temperature is 3 – 5 degree Celsius higher than the outside one, thus it is not necessary to protect the crops against the cold.

With over 3,000 square meters of cucumber cultivated in the membrane house, Si has harvested nearly 4 tonnes of fruits which were sold at 15 – 20,000 VND per kilogram and brought him more than 70 million VND (over 3,000 USD). This crop is expected to last till April.

Si’s model is not a rare case in the province. The result was gained thanks to the concentrated instruction to apply the advanced technological progress, focus on boosting up the high technology into farming sector to improve the cultivation effectiveness.

The province is now home to 246 HTAMs with total area of net and membrane houses of over 400 square meters; several large scale concentrated hi-tech production area operated under the cooperation and linkage in transferring the technology process, providing the technical material, organizing the production and consumption under the value chain.

Apart from hi-tech application, many localities have promoted their advantages to strongly develop the provincial key products such as lychee, orange, pomelo, hill chicken, safe vegetable and vegetable for processing among others.

After one year implementing the One Commune One Product programme, the province recognized 46 products, including 15 products of 4 star and 31 others of 3 star. The income per cultivation unit reached 105 million VND (4,500 USD) per hectare in 2019 (national figure was 90 million VND per hectare).

Increasing the quality of farm produce and new rural style communes

Thanks to the higher income form the fields and other sources with the Governmental support, the local farmers are able to contribute more to building the new style rural (NSR).

The NSR building task has achieved prominent result. The province has 114 NSR communes, higher than the national average rate and two NSR districts.

According to the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) Duong Thanh Tung, renovated rural area benefits the locals, hence taking more efforts.

Basing on the actual situation, in the upcoming time, the farming sector will continue accelerating the implementation of renovating the agriculture to increase the added values and sustainable development; mapping the concentrated, specialized and cultivation areas of key and signature products so as to manage the soil, orient the planning of infrastructure system and technical service for the production.

Additionally, the quality of farm produce should be increased because Bac Giang is a key agriculture province but only 40 percent of the agricultural products were produced under safety standard. This was the concerning issue to be solved so as to achieve outstanding progress in the future.

Particularly, 40 percent of the total animal and poultry were raised under VietGAP process while 30 percent of crops were grown under the safe procedure in Hiep Hoa district.

In Luc Ngan district, the competent agencies and farmers have implemented the steps to produce lychee to ensure the export standard to Japan this year.

Besides, the farming sector should coordinate with relevant agencies to draw the investors to the agriculture and rural area, organize the trade promotion and origin traceability for the key, signature and potential products in the province to smoothly target to the domestic and foreign markets.
