Green asparagus on the land of An Ha
Green asparagus has helped numerous households at Kep hamlet, An Ha commune, Lang Giang district, Bac Giang province have a steady income. This new kind of plant is evaluated to bring high economic benefits.

Hoang Thi Luyen’s family is among the first households planting this vegetable. “In 2013, by watching some television programs, I found that green asparagus brought higher economic value than other kinds of vegetable in many localities. After studying, I realized this kind of vegetable is easy to grow with affordable capital investment; thus, I piloted growing in an area of 720 square meters (2 sào). I learned caring techniques through books, newspaper and visiting the growing model in Gia Binh district, Bac Ninh province while I was growing asparagus”, said Luyen.
After three months, the asparagus can be harvested. Every day, Luyen harvests 7-10 kilos of asparagus on 720-square meter area and purchased by Dung Ha Agricultural Products Co., Ltd (Hanoi) at the price of 50-60,000 VND (2.2-2.6 USD) per kilo. Because of the high economic efficiency, she expanded the growing area to 2,880 square meters (8 sào). In 2017, Luyen’s family earned some 200 million VND (8,783 USD). They are breeding to expand the growing area by 1,440 square meters (4 sào). Similarly, Ha Van Phong’ family has about 1,800 square meters (5 sào) of asparagus. He earns the benefit of some 100 million VND (4,390 USD) per year.
Kep hamlet is a home to 14 households growing green asparagus in a total area of more than 2 hectares. According to estimate, the local people earned some 1.5 billion VND (65,870 USD) from asparagus. Based on its economic efficiency, the communal people’s committee of An Ha popularized and invited farmers from different hamlets to visit this growing model and learn experience. Besides, they encouraged the farmers to expand growing areas to gradually establish a production area with the diversified agricultural produce of the commune.
